The Misadventures of Kuukuu Omoi

— How to ENJOY a CONVENTION, via Kuukuu Omoi

imageHO THEREEEE

you’ve booked your ticket, and you have all the plans to ENJOY your stay at your convention at etc. etc.

however, I feel as though theres a certain number of thing you should know so that you should COMPLETELY enjoy your stay at X Y convention, so stay tuned and SHARE THIS POST so that all you know can know how to do it as well.

This post will be converted to a tldr post FIRST then a explanation next. because honestly, that’s what i would have wanted if i was searching this in the mere hours before my con that i expected the most out of.

WITH that being said, here are the facts and the quixkguide to this.:

  1. PLAN YOUR CON
  2. PLAN YOUR BUDGET (AND BARRRRTERR)
  3. PLAN YOUR EVENTS
  4. PLAN YOUR COSPLAYS
  5. PLAN YOUR ACCESSIBILITY
  6. PLAN YOUR FRIENDSHIPS
  7. PLAN YOUR FREETIME.

now to explain each of these one by one, over the years i’ve been on the cosplay game.

1. PLAN YOUR CON

OOOOOH you wanna go to a con? why? why are you going…. NO REALLY. WHY ARE YOU SPENDING ETC ETC TO GO TO A CONVENTION. if you can’t face this then why are you going? this is number ONE because if you try to go to a con without a purpose, you will ALWAYS without FAULT be disappointed. it’s like going to a fan fiction site expecting great work and clicking on the first fan fiction you find. #enoughsaid.

2. PLAN YOUR BUDGETTTTTTTTTT

toooooooo important. IF you are cosplaying an object and wish to buy something you should understand that money is a thing. Always plan out what you can buy and how much you can buy it at the dealers room & 90%  can be found cheaper online.  The difference is at these conventions people will try to charge you because of your ignorance of the true rate of the prices at hand. Never be afraid to offer a deal on something that you want to buy. If you don’t understand this then listen to me in the next paragraph to understand how to put in a deal to buy something at a cheaper price..

If something is eight dollars a pair then offer a deal if you buy three and you want to buy them al l at 20$ flat rate. I just got a pair of sunglasses for 20 dollaressss a piece. for three. Being educated and think about how to propose A deal to those that are selling these products that you wish to buy. I have saved so much money by simply putting out an offer and expecting it to be recognized. Not because it was honest, But because it was understandable and what I offered.

3. plan your events

Honestly I would look at a menu of the convention and choose 2 Events   you wish to go to the most. After this I would say wait at the entrance of these events for three hours before these events and if arriving at these events you say that there is not a chance for you to be going to be the vents then stop. This is a surefire way to make sure that you enjoy the events that you wish to enjoy at the convention. Because if you have to wait three sorry excuse me five hours for an event that you want to go to you need to go to a smaller convention.

4.. PLAN YOUR COSPLAY .

Lord Jesus please listen to this. If you have a cosplay pleaseee  for the love of all that is holy cosplay, prepare for what you plan to do.

The challenge I set for you is to walk around in your daily life for a wonderful day in  your cosplay if you can pass this then you’ll be fine at a little cosplay con and  or whatever convention you are attending but otherwise assess the issues at hand when you feel as though they arise. Too many times we feel as though everything is okay until we actually wear what we feel as though is perfect.

5. plan your accessibility.

Simply put don’t count yourself a accessible when you are not.

6. PLAN your Friendships.

If you know that you have friends attending this convention,   for the love of all that is holy make plans with these friends. It enriches your experience if you’re able to enjoy something with someone else, not to mention if you are able to drink and party with the same people.

A secret plan on enjoying this convention is that you bring your own liquor and know your  limit  for drinking, Because that would make it so that no matter what is going down you are in route to enjoy yourself because you know how to  do so.

 7. Please  PLAN YOUR FREEEETIMEEE.

Enough said in the title of this bullet.

The Truth Behind Heroes Of Cosplay: New Orleans

Heroes of Cosplay is a popular tv series on SyFy that showcases certain cosplayers at conventions across the US. But what you might not know about it is how this show treats the people at conventions… the ones that aren’t the “elite” few, the cosplayers and convention goers behind the camera. I never had to deal with them until they came into my town - New Orleans. I thought it would be a great opportunity to see this show in person but my opinion quickly changed.

The way they treated my fellow cosplaying friends and the way they took over our beloved costume contest was completely inexcusable. There were a few mishaps on the convention floor but a majority of the issues came around the time of the Costume Contest. This was my third time attending Wizard World New Orleans and usually the costume contest is done in 1-2 hours. This one took over 2 hours just to get through the individual category. It was clearly being staged because only certain cosplayers were being allowed to talk about their costumes on stage, everyone else was rushed off. I didn’t realize it at the time but the ones they stopped to chat about were mostly Heroes of Cosplay participants. They didn’t care one bit about anyone else. It became really painful to watch/participate when I saw beautiful and elaborate costumes getting rushed off because they weren’t one of the “elite few” from the show.

After the contest was over, my friends and I went on to enjoy the rest of the convention as much as possible. Some of us completely shut out the competition because it was the black mark of the whole show. I began gathering stories from my friends and fellow Wizard World convention goers. Then other people began approaching me with their account of what happened. Here are our collected thoughts:

Encounters on the Convention Floor:

This happened Saturday around 2:30pm the Cosplay Circuit Digital Hall Awards photobooth, where they take your photograph and post it on the Wizard World site. Jesse Lagers tried to cut in line in front of me. The obnoxious camera crew’s goal was to cut the “Costume Contest Winner” into the line. I was sandwiched right between him and the AVP guys. The costume contest didn’t happen until later that night. They decided the winners for the contest before the show even started.

I just want to chime in for a second here… I have always loved Yaya, she was always nice to me over the last 3 years and I really admired her up until WW New Orleans. Now I’m a photographer at alot of Cons and I’ve worked for Wizard World for years. This year I wasn’t working for them because I was working exclusively for a very well known website. When I passed by her just in walking around the con floor she pretty much stopped me and was like Oh you ARE going to take my picture now. I was crazy
